This retreat will focus on concentration (jhana) and how it relates to the practice of insight meditation and mindfulness.

In concentration or what is often called serenity or Jhana meditation, we bring our awareness to one object of meditation to the exclusion of everything else, thereby collecting and unifying all mental activities. This ancient practice that the Buddha perfected is a practice that has been proven to counteract the over-stimulation of today’s world and of life!  Practicing concentration meditation collects the mental activity and “builds the muscle” of concentration, enabling us to turn away from the constant pull of our technical world (namely our smartphones, computer screens, games, and entertainment) allowing us to settle into the deep serenity of our true nature.

The practice of concentration also points out how we can develop and cultivate the mind with heightened clarity and insight showing us how our habitual patterns of mind cause us to suffer both in meditation and in active life.  The process of identifying the hindrances that cause difficulties in our life or our practice is referred to as “purification of mind.” This system of identification and classification allows us to recognize and use negativity to our advantage by developing a laser-like awareness that helps us to see past the negativity of past and future thoughts.  Concentration practices discussed in this retreat can lead one to a profound stillness and deep joy, as well as the possibility of the deep meditative absorption known as the Jhanas.

When we embrace and allow all areas of our experience with awareness, painful patterns in body and mind begin to dissolve. Gently, we learn how to accept and let go of judgment and reactivity within ourselves. As we practice the art of meditation, and as we non-judgmentally view and understand the hindrances that stand in the way of stillness and joy, clarity begins to shine through.
